Dorset Freemasonry is proud to organise the Ashlars event for the second time!

Dorset Freemasons assembled outdoors for Ashlars event

Over sixty young people enjoyed a packed day of activities, including firing .22 rifles, axe throwing, target archery, bushcraft, assault course, combat archery and tug of war. On arrival, the young people were welcomed with a blue bucket hat for protection from the sun and a reminder of their day at ASHLARS.

They were divided into eight teams, and scores for each evolution were recorded throughout the day by our volunteer guides. Each activity was managed and instructed by a Max Events member of staff. Most of them are former military, so their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm are priceless.

It was also lovely to see more spectators attending, with some family members remaining throughout the day. After a refreshing lunch break, the activities continued for the young people, and spectators could cheer on the teams at each activity. They could also check out the outdoor hotels, which are available to hire; many enjoyed the delights of the Max Events Café served by the accommodating Tilly and Millie.

The Bushcraft activity taught survival skills and wildlife awareness. The rifle and axe throwing taught patience and concentration. The battle archery taught teamwork, as did the assault course and tug of war. All are designed to build confidence in ability, teamwork and self-esteem. On completion, MCF prizes were awarded for best assault rifle shot, best axe throwing and overall winning team. However, no one went home empty-handed, as an MCF keyring and pen were presented to all!

Youngsters attended from families, youth groups, charities and schools. We hope that they were able to take away new life skills. Many thank you emails were sent to the event organisers, which were gratefully received!

This was their first:

‘My grandson was very apprehensive on arrival at the event, not knowing anyone and being a little reserved. I must admit being concerned that he wouldn’t enjoy it. He went off with his head a little down, and I was expecting a phone call to pick him up. On returning at the end of the day, he was busy chatting to newfound friends and big smiles. Had a good day, Josh? Fantastic, Grandad, can I go again next year?’
