With the Masonic Housing Association (MHA) marking its 50th Anniversary, this landmark year shines a renewed spotlight on our enduring contributions to community welfare.

Founded in 1975 following the Housing Act of 1974, the MHA was created to provide affordable, purpose-built sheltered housing for older people - supporting Freemasons, their families, and members of the wider community. Today, five residences comprising 189 independent-living flats are home to a vibrant mix of individuals aged 55 and over, each supported by a dedicated Scheme Manager.

What truly sets the MHA apart is the Masonic spirit that underpins its work. Self-funding and governed by volunteer Freemasons, the Association wholly exemplifies the principle of service. Local House Committees, appointed by Provincial Grand Masters, ensure each development remains a thriving, safe and compassionate community.

As President Geoffrey Dearing and Chairman Oliver Lodge emphasised during their presentation at the November 2025 Convocation of Supreme Grand Chapter, the MHA exemplifies the ‘Community Engagement’ Pillar of UGLE’s Strategy, clearly demonstrating Freemasonry’s positive impact beyond the Lodge room. As part of their address, they also presented a highly informative video about the work of the MHA.

To mark its half-century, the MHA has launched an updated Strategic Plan to raise its profile and strengthen alignment with UGLE. The plan seeks to inspire greater participation and position the MHA as both a practical housing solution for older Freemasons and a meaningful charitable cause for members wishing to contribute time or expertise.

For many readers, the MHA may have remained a "hidden jewel", but its mission is simple and profound: to enrich lives through dignity, independence, and community. As the Association enters its next 50 years, Freemasons everywhere are invited to learn more, get involved, and help ensuring this remarkable legacy continues to flourish.
