Can you please introduce yourself?
My name is Vishnu Shanker. I am 22 years old and a member of John Miller Lodge No. 1906 EC, Chennai, India. I am currently studying for a Master’s in Business Administration at the University of Westminster in London.
How long have you been a Freemason for?
I have been a Freemason for just over a year. I was initiated on 21 August 2024.
How did you get to know about Freemasonry?
I first learned about Freemasonry through my father, whose dedication to the Craft intrigued me from a young age. A visit to a classic car show at our Lodge in Chennai deepened that curiosity. The sense of the unknown, combined with my father’s example, gradually inspired me to seek a deeper understanding of Freemasonry.
What made you join Freemasonry?
Having just completed my bachelor’s degree in architecture in 2024, my father suggested that I might consider joining Freemasonry. He encouraged me to apply to an English Constitution Lodge. The timing worked out perfectly, as I had planned to take a sabbatical the following year, and this opportunity aligned naturally with my path.
What did you think about Freemasonry before you joined?
Growing up, I often saw my father diligently preparing for Lodge meetings and studying his ceremony books. From this, I understood Freemasonry to be a disciplined organisation, rooted in structure, learning, and mastery of the Craft.
How has your experience been as a Freemason, and did it align with your expectations?
My experience has far exceeded my expectations. What began as a childhood curiosity has become a deeply enriching journey filled with learning, fellowship, and meaningful milestones—from my initiation to attending District Grand Lodge meetings and visiting Lodges abroad. The warmth, diversity, and guidance of fellow Freemasons have made the experience far more transformative than I imagined.
What fascinates you most about being a Freemason, and how does it impact you personally?
What fascinates me most is the diversity within Freemasonry. It brings together men of all ages, backgrounds, and professions, united by shared values and a commitment to service to the community. Personally, it has given me the privilege of learning from distinguished Freemasons who generously share their wisdom with humility—lessons that have left a lasting impression on me.
What do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of being a Freemason?
The fellowship and guidance I have received across different Lodges and countries. From attending District Grand Lodge meetings in Chennai and Coimbatore to visiting Lodge Kedah in Malaysia, these experiences have strengthened my bonds within the Craft and broadened my perspective.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is an international organisation where people come together to be better and to do better. It strengthens bonds, instils values, and encourages individuals to contribute positively to society. I wholeheartedly encourage those who seek self-improvement and wish to bring their individuality to the Craft to consider joining.
If you had to explain Freemasonry in a phrase, what would it be?
Freemasonry is all about bringing out the best in you.
For Vishnu, Freemasonry is both a personal and global journey—one that blends tradition with growth, and curiosity with lifelong learning. His story reflects how the Craft continues to inspire younger generations across cultures and borders.
