Cumbria Freemasons are honoured to announce that they will be hosting a historic event of national significance, commemorating the anniversary of D-Day. The event is being orchestrated in concert with the esteemed Royal Pageant Master of Buckingham Palace.

The commemorative activities will commence with Richard Cowie, one of our esteemed members, playing the bagpipes over a series of 10 days to honour the memory of Bill Millin, starting on May 28th, 2024, and culminating on D-Day. This tribute coincides with a nationwide remembrance beginning 80 days in advance, with Cumbria Freemasons privileged to present the final ten days in conjunction with the final national ten days in the Isle of Man.

Each morning at exactly 8 am, Cowie will perform the haunting song “Highland Laddie” at locations around Kendal during the final 10-day vigil. Locations include Kendal (castle and war memorial), Carlisle, Windermere (on the lake), Ambleside, Penrith, and throughout the area.

On June 6th, at 5:30 pm, a special event will be held at Kendal Rugby Club to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The event will feature a commemorative parade, military vehicles, the Burneside Brass band, a period singer, and a beacon that will join others nationwide in illumination at 9:15 pm. It will also include a hog roast and a grand raffle.

As Freemasons, we are dedicated to service, whether through event participation, charitable fundraising, or volunteering within public and community organisations. Service lies at the core of Freemasonry, and our members contribute significantly with their time, resources, and expertise. This event is a prime example of our commitment to service as we pay homage to a remarkable chapter in history.

We warmly welcome everyone to join us for this memorable occasion. Tickets are available at £15 for adults and £8 for children under 13, which includes the delightful hog roast. For those deciding to partake on the day itself, entry is a mere £5 (please note, this does not include the hog roast).

All proceeds will benefit Armed Forces charities. We anticipate a robust turnout of 200-300+ attendees.
