There are now 87 Lodges and seven Chapters pursuing a similar, yet distinct, course across England and Wales, where towns and cities have universities.

Ruislip St Martin’s Lodge

Biography:

Ruislip St Martin’s owes its name and origins to the founder members from St Martin’s Church, Ruislip, however during the following years, membership diversified and spread beyond the local area.

While the Lodge still has links with St Martin’s Church, an opportunity to create a link with Brunel University London was seized in 2013, and Ruislip St Martin’s became the first Scheme Lodge to obtain approval from the university’s Governing Council. Since that time, the Lodge has developed, enjoying a truly mixed membership of retirees, workers and students, making it a vibrant and fun Lodge to join.

The Lodge works in co-operation with Freemasonry for Women to facilitate prospective female students.

Saint Hugh Lodge

Biography:

St Hugh Lodge is a vibrant Lodge with more than 80 members, aged from 18 to 90-plus. This blend of ages works remarkably successfully, and they all learn from each other. We encourage new members to join, make them welcome and then they are supported by Lodge members, especially their personal mentor. The mentoring is not just for new members but is continued so that members are always learning.

St Hugh Lodge was chosen to be the United Grand Lodge of England Universities Scheme Lodge for Lincolnshire in 2011 and was only the 47th Lodge out of the 7,000 in England to be given such a position. Since then, we have had an average of eight students from the University of Lincoln join us each year.

We have people joining us from all walks of life, ages, religions, races and positions in society. St Hugh Lodge is a very happy and social Lodge, whose members support and care for each other and their families.

Saint Padarn Lodge

Biography:

Saint Padarn Lodge, based in Aberystwyth in West Wales Province, was established in 1932 as a daughter Lodge of Aberystwyth Lodge No 1072. Saint Padarn Lodge was established by former university staff, as the mother Lodge was too full. Saint Padarn Lodge had always been the unofficial university Lodge, until it was formally registered with the United Grand Lodge of England’s Universities Scheme in 2019.

Saint Vincent Lodge is the universities Lodge for the Province of Bristol. Saint Vincent Lodge was consecrated in 1872 and although many members from professions covering law, engineering, the armed services and clergy have joined the Lodge, it has predominantly been known as a medical/doctors’ Lodge.

Salisbury Union Lodge

Biography:

The Lodge was formed in Hertfordshire by the amalgamation in 2012 of Salisbury Lodge No 3228 (consecrated in 1907 in Hertfordshire) and Union Lodge No 767 (consecrated in 1859 in Karachi, India), the latter having left Pakistan somewhat precipitously when Freemasonry was declared illegal over there.

In the same year as the amalgamation, the Lodge was officially recognised and accepted as the Universities Scheme Lodge for Hertfordshire.

The Lodge was consecrated on 8 September 1971.

At present, the membership numbers 58 with an age range of 19 to 86. Members come from a wide variety of backgrounds and professions, and we consider ourselves a close, friendly and welcoming Lodge.

Southampton University Lodge

Founded in 1950 by a group of students and staff from the University of Southampton, the Southampton University Lodge is open to applications from students and staff of the university, as well as local Southampton residents.

Our Lodge has a rich mixture of different professions, religions and backgrounds, resulting in a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is reflective of both the University of Southampton and Freemasonry, demonstrated by our famously friendly Festive Boards, on which we pride ourselves.

St Alphege Lodge

Biography:

St Alphege is a fairly large Lodge and is proud to be a member of the Universities Scheme, which provides us with a steady stream of younger members who mix seamlessly with our older members.

The Masonic year for our Lodge starts in October and ends in April with the Installation of our new Master. During the summer months, he prepares for his first ceremony, which for many years has been an Initiation (of at least one candidate). We continue to meet through the winter, on the first Saturday evening of the month.

Fraternal visits have been held with Eldon Lodge 1755 of Clevedon for a number of years and are eagerly anticipated.

Additionally, we hold a number of social events during the year, with the Partners’ Festival, summer barbeque and annual carol service being regular occurrences.

Visitors to St Alphege Lodge are ensured of a warm welcome and an opportunity to witness our extended Royal Cumberland workings.

St Augustine Lodge 972

Biography:

The St Augustine Lodge is one of the largest lodges in the province of East Kent. Our meetings are very well attended with a significant number of guests at each of them. Younger members have plenty of opportunities to engage in the ceremony and fully contribute to the evolution of the Lodge. In addition, the Lodge membership is very international with 15 nations being represented. This wide variety of trades and cultures, together with the fine ceremony, makes St Augustine Lodge one of the most diverse and enjoyable lodges in the Province of East Kent

St David's Lodge

Biography:

St David's Freemasons Lodge was founded in 1827 in Bangor, making it the oldest existing Lodge in north Wales. Thomas Telford’s Menai Suspension Bridge was completed just one year earlier. This is a traditional Lodge drawing membership from the local population and more recently students, former students and staff at Bangor University, who make up a significant proportion of the term-time population. In 2016, St David's Lodge was granted Universities Scheme status by the United Grand Lodge of England. This is a great privilege and will more readily enable applications for membership from alumni, staff and students of further and higher education.

The Lodge was consecrated on Wednesday 8 October 1919 at Freemasons’ Hall in Princes Street, Northampton, under the sponsorship of Pomfret Lodge No 360. There were 36 founder members, including RW Bro Lord Lilford, the Provincial Grand Master, who was installed as the first Worshipful Master. The Lodge is the Province's first United Grand Lodge of England Universities Scheme Lodge, with an objective of forming a relationship with the University of Northampton and a route into the Craft for students at the university.

The Concordia Lodge No.5131, originally a London lodge, transferred to the Masonic Province of Staffordshire in 2018 and is now a vibrant and progressive Universities Scheme Lodge with links to lodges throughout the Midlands who assist newer members advance in their masonic career.

The Lodge is open to all but especially welcomes those with academic connections who are students, graduates, apprentices or staff of Wolverhampton and other universities/colleges.

The Cumberland Lodge

Lodge number: 3858

Biography:

Cumberland Lodge was founded in 1918. The first Master of the Lodge was Hugh Cumberland (hence the name), who was a land agent and auctioneer from Luton.

Our first meetings were held in the town hall, before it was burnt down on 19 July 1919 (nothing to do with us, I must add). Fortunately, we did not have a Lodge meeting that day!

Without the town hall, the Lodge met at various venues in the town until 1924, when we built our own Masonic Hall on Church Street, Luton.

We continued to meet there until 1996, when we moved to our current premises in Bowling Green Lane. Our old premises on Church Street have now become a Pizza Express, but you can still see the Masonic sign above the door.

Over the years, Cumberland Lodge has become one of the most successful Lodges in Luton, raising huge amounts of money for worthy causes. Our members come from all walks of life, religions and backgrounds, truly reflecting the diversity of Luton itself.

Apart from our Lodge meetings, we have a very active social calendar where we involve our partners and families. We are an incredibly happy and friendly bunch and are known among many as the friendliest Lodge in Luton.

The Lodge of Connaught & Truth No 521 has been an integral part of Huddersfield life since 1845. It is a Lodge steeped in history and cultural heritage, which has held prominent members such as a former Grand Master, The Marquess of Ripon. With over 160 years of continuous history, it was formed at the same time as national institutions such as the Grand National and the University of Manchester. It also found its place within a bustling student town accommodating to long-serving Mason and students of the nearby area alike.

The Lodge of Honor & Generosity

Biography:

The Lodge was constituted in 1767 and is proud to be a Hall Stone Lodge. It was one of the first Lodges to become a member of the expanded Universities Scheme from 2008.

The Lodge is an eclectic mix of recent graduates from a wide variety of universities from the UK and abroad, professionals, and the recently retired. We have no particular ‘leaning’, although we have plenty of fencers, quite a few practising scientists, and a few officers from the HM Armed Forces, as well as members who are not British citizens. Lots of our members work overseas, but we keep in touch with everyone, not least through our lively WhatsApp group and the hard work of our Almoner.

We are active in the Metropolitan Grand Lodge and get all members involved in our ceremonies right from the start. We are a smart Lodge with excellent rituals and dinners but also nicely informal.

The Northern Polytechnic Lodge

Biography:

The Northern Polytechnic Lodge was founded in London in 1945 by lecturers, students, and staff of the North London Polytechnic for further and higher education. Many of our founders had recently returned from active service in the Second World War and sought to constitute a Masonic Lodge that harbored fellowship and harmony in the post-war era. Over the years, the North London Polytechnic evolved to become a part of what is now known as the London Metropolitan University.

Our traditional links with the former North London Polytechnic, whose educational emphasis was focused on nature, art, science, and industry, have sadly faded. However, this foundation serves to motivate our renewed mission to nurture Masonic opportunities for any student who is living and studying in London and wishes to pursue Freemasonry as a timeless complement to their contemporary lives.

The current membership reflects a diverse range of professional backgrounds, ranging from health & safety, education, software development, IT, accountancy, creative industries, and performing arts as well as those currently pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

The Pentangle Lodge

Biography:

The Pentangle Lodge, No. 1174 was consecrated on 2nd July 1867 and is a very friendly Lodge, currently comprised of 39 Brethren, plus 2 Honorary members. The Lodge does not hold regular Lodges of Instruction, preferring to hold a rehearsal meeting on the preceding Friday to the Regular Lodge Meeting for Officers and suitably qualified, (i.e., by Masonic Degree) Brethren. Originally a predominantly Military Lodge, it has gradually mutated over many years into a Lodge attracting mainly professionally qualified men, hence its logical involvement in the United Grand Lodge of England Universities Scheme.
