Winston Churchill: 1874 - 1965

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, DL, FRS, RA (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century, Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a historian, a writer (under the pen name Winston S. Churchill), and an artist. Since its inception in 1901, Churchill is the only British Prime Minister to have won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was the first person to be made an honorary citizen of the United States.

Churchill was initiated into Studholme Lodge (now United Studholme Alliance Lodge) No. 1591 on 24 May 1901. Churchill completed his second degree nearly two months later on 19th July and was then made a Master Mason on 5th March 1902.

Something you may not know: Churchill’s personal masonic apron is held on public display by our Library and Museum here at Freemasons’ Hall.
