METROPOLITAN GRAND LODGE AND GRAND CHAPTER OF LONDON

The inaugurations of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge and Metropoltian Grand Chapter of London brought the largest gathering of Masons in London since the celebration of the 275th anniversary of Grand Lodge in 1992.

On the morning of Wednesday 1 October nearly 4,000 Royal Arch Companions welcomed the First Grand Principal, HRH The Duke of Kent,KG, who inaugurated the Metropolitan Grand Chapter and installed Rt Hon Lord Millett as the first Metropolitan Grand Superintendent. He, in turn, installed R.J. Race as Deputy Metropolitan Grand Superintendent, B.A. de Neut as 2nd Metropolitan Grand Principal and R. Cox as 3rd Metropolitan Grand Principal before appointing and investing 10 Metropolitan Group Chairmen, their Deputies and 39 Metropolitan Grand Officers.


After lunch, at which the MW The Grand Master proposed the health of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge and the Metropolitan Grand Master Designate (click here for text), nearly 5,000 brethren took part in the inaugruation of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge and Lord Millett's installation as the first Metropolitan Grand Master. Lord Millett then installed R.J. Race as Deputy Metropolitan Grand Master and appointed and invested 10 Metropolitan Group Chairmen, their Deputies and 71 Metropolitan Grand Officers.

Amongst those given a special welcome to the proceedings were Rt Hon Lord Cornwallis Pro Grand Master and Pro First Grand Principal 1982 - 91; Rt Hon Earl of Eglinton and Winton Assistant Grand Master 1989 - 95; Rev Prebendary Leighton Thompson 3rd Grand Principal 1985 - 90 and Rev Peter Hemingway 3rd Grand Principal 1991 2002.
