in the Community Week - a success
During the last week of June and the first of July the Craft was more visible in the Community than it has been for more than sixty years. The mood was encapsulated by the Pro Grand Master in his address to Grand Lodge on 11 September when he said " above all, the feeling that struck me most as I paraded in full regalia down Warwick High Street, was that at last we were doing something open and proactive in our communities, to demonstrate the good things we stand for and to show how proud we are to be members of this ancient and honourable institution." The Craft responded magnificently to the project, within over one thousand events organised locally. In addition to religious services and open days at Masonic centres there were charity events; sports days; social events for children, the elderly and the disadvantaged; theatrical and musical performances; the four Welsh Provinces took a stand at the Royal Welsh Show, as did other Provinces whose County Shows coincided with the project. Suffolk fitted out a bus as a Masonic Information Centre which toured towns in the County. Hundreds of thousands of pounds were handed over to local Charities and local Civic, Religious and Community leaders were given the opportunity to find out more about Freemasonry and have any concerns they had addressed. The aim of raising public awareness was certainly achieved. Through the hard work of the Provincial Information Officers and their teams Freemasonry received unprecedented positive reporting in the local press and on local radio and television. Links have been forged with local charities and community groups which will be continued into the future; in some areas work has already begun on joint projects which will benefit the whole community. Although recruitment was not part of the project, open days and other events have not only resulted in enquiries from potential candidates but have brought back into Freemasonry brethren who had moved location and lost contact with their original Lodges. The Week required a great deal of planning and hard work but the general consensus is that it was not only worth it but very enjoyable. |
